Documents have a shelf life
Several of the items in an extension file are only accepted within a period of their issue. Gather them in January for a filing in May and some of them have to be gathered again, at the same cost and the same inconvenience.
How long each item stays current is confirmed rather than assumed, because the periods are not the same for every item.
The bank side moves too
Where a financial condition applies, what is read is the state of things across a period ending near the filing, not the state of things when you started worrying about it.
What early preparation is good for
Everything that does not expire. Knowing which route you are on, which documents you will need, and which of them somebody else has to issue. That work can be done a year out and it keeps perfectly.
