It gets more expensive and more consequential the longer it runs, and the worst version is the one where somebody waits another month hoping it resolves itself.

Overstay is counted in days, from the day after your permission to stay ended.
What accrues, and where the amount stops accruing.
Where a fine stops being only a fine, and what changes at each point.
The order of actions today, and the things not to do.
Overstay is arithmetic. That is the good news, because arithmetic can be dealt with.
Counting runs from the day after the last day of your permission to stay, and it does not pause. It is one number, and everything that follows depends on how large it is.
There is a daily amount, and there is a point beyond which the amount stops growing. That ceiling is the reason a long overstay and a very long overstay can cost the same in money and differ enormously in everything else.
This is the page on the site where a plausible invention would do the most harm, because someone would plan a departure around it. The figures appear once they have been checked, and not before.

Presenting yourself and being found are different situations, and they are treated differently.
Beyond certain lengths, an overstay stops being a matter of money and starts affecting whether and when you can return. The thresholds are specific numbers of days, and which side of one you are on matters far more than how you got there.
Coming forward and being stopped are not the same situation. The difference is one of the few parts of this that is still in your hands, and it gets smaller every week.
Count the days, exactly. Find your passport and your last entry stamp. Tell someone who does this for a living what the number is, before you book anything or go anywhere near a border.
Then act on the answer the same week.
Do not wait another month hoping it resolves itself. Do not take advice from a forum about your specific number. Do not make a border run to see what happens.
Some situations are past the point where filing and accompanying you is the help you need. If yours is one of them we will say so on the first conversation rather than the fourth, and we will say who to see. We prepare and file documents; we do not go to court.
